Mentoring 4 Screen Celebration
I spent a lovely day at the celebration event for Cult Cymru’s ‘Mentoring 4 Screen’ scheme last Saturday. I was lucky to be selected as a mentor when the scheme first started back in 2020/2021. I had the pleasure of mentoring two freelancers through the scheme. Both were looking to make a move in their career and it was incredibly rewarding to be able to guide them through their move and see them progress. See the image below for a case study with one of my mentees.
It was such a lovely event that had networking at the heart of it, which was so nice to get back to doing post-pandemic. I managed to finally meet Yeota, one of my mentees, in person, after conducting all of our mentoring sessions via Zoom. She’s doing amazing well and is now working as an Assistant Producer at Boom, working on Skin A&E. I also met with some of the other mentees who benefited from the scheme, who worked or were looking to work in all different departments in both scripted and unscripted, as well as being able to meet my fellow mentors.
We started the day with speed networking for our initial introductions. This was followed by a very tasty lunch and a celebration video which showed just how impactful the scheme had been for both mentees and their mentors (I’ll share it on my social media once it goes live). After lunch we split into groups and discussed topics in the industry including how to improve diversity, what needs to change in the industry, wellbeing and work life-balance, and how to continue their motiviation after their mentoring period. I suggested the topic of wellbeing and work-life balance, and led this discussion. We had some really interesting suggestions, with the Wellbeing Facilitator having a positive impact on sets, but of course, it highlighted the range of issues we still have in the industry.
To finish off the event we had the chance to network over drinks. It was so lovely to catch up with my industry peers as well as those just starting their journey down their chosen route, especially after so long of having to conduct meetings/catch ups over Zoom.
