Become a better manager with coaching and mentoring skills

I am so excited to announce a brand new training course, that helps to improve your management skills by incorporating coaching and mentoring skills into your management.

Become a better manager with coaching and mentoring skills is the first course not presented by myself, but by another brilliant trainer. Anna Roberts who was the Mentoring Co-ordinator for the ScreenSkills Production Coordinator Training Programme for Unscripted TV we ran between Jan 2021 – May 2023.  In this role she trained 67 mentors who worked as either PCs, JPMs, PMs, PEs, LPs or HOPs who proceeded to undertake mentoring sessions with our 77 trainees.  What we found from this programme, was that the coaching and mentoring skills that were taught really helped the mentors, not only with their mentees, but with managing their teams:

“The [mentor] training was very useful and I have carried that into managing my team at work. Learning to mentor rather than instruct has been particularly useful.”

“This experience and training has increased my skill base as a Line Manager within my current role.  It has provided me with the tools to mentor more effectively and over a lengthy period of time.”

We wanted to impart these knowledge and skills so that those working in management roles can become more effective and confident managers.  The training focuses on those all-important soft skills and is run as a 2hr interactive workshop which includes:

•      How to start a working relationship

•      Awareness of the different styles of management and leadership

•      The skills and behaviours of a good manager

•      The tools and techniques you can use to get the best out of your team – with an opportunity to practice them in the session

The training is aimed at anyone with management responsibilities in film & TV whichever department/team you work in, whether that’s scripted or unscripted.

Anna Roberts is an experienced coach, mentor and trainer with a background in media and education, working for 14 years as a video-journalist, documentary producer/director and self-shooting PD making programmes for BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and S4C. She has completed an ILM level 7 in Coaching and Mentoring and now focuses her time on running training and providing coaching and mentoring sessions.  I’m really pleased she’s able to offer this training through Media Career Advice and I’m looking forward to working with her in this capacity.

Our first training session will take place on the 21st September between 2pm – 4pm. We’ll look to put on more sessions later in the year if there is high demand.
